Description
Trimethyl Chitosan forms gels with multivalent anions and clear solutions that dry to strong, clear films. Its ideal for scaffolds, cell therapy, drug delivery, and biomedical applications. Its a water soluble natural biopolymer that’s biocompatible, biodegradable, antibacterial, and adhesive to tissue.
Quaternization of chitosan is a method of modifying and improving the properties and functionalities of chitosan. Quaternization of chitosan occurs by introducing a quaternary ammonium moiety onto or outside the chitosan backbone, via chemical reactions with primary amino and hydroxyl groups. The most established form of quaternized chitosan is N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) and N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethyl ammonium) propyl] chitosan. By modifying chitosan through the insertion of a quaternary moiety, permanent cationic charges on the polysaccharide backbone results in improvements in many of chitosan’s beneficial properties, such as improved;
Aqueous (water) solubility
High charge density and positive charge
Stability over a wide pH and ionic conditions
Mucoadhesion
Permeation (ability to open and cross tight junctions of epithelial cells)
Penetration of drugs and therapeutics
Antimicrobial activity
These Trimethyl Chitosan properties broaden chitosan’s applicability across a vast array of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
